Happy 9th Birthday, Noah!

Dear Noah,

What a year.  Every year I wonder what in the world I can say about you that hasn't already been said.  You are one of the great joys of my life and that joy just multiplies times infinity every year.

You are the sweetest, most caring, most in tune with people's feelings child I've ever met.  You just ooze compassion.  You notice everything and are always quick with a compliment or a hug or a million watt smile.

Mama's boy doesn't even begin to describe you.  It's almost like you are just an extension of me.  I worry about that sometimes because I do not want you to be a grown up man who calls your mommy when you get a cold. (For the record, I will tell you to suck it up Buttercup)  I try SO DANG HARD to make sure you are independent and capable while swimming in happiness that you still want to curl up in my lap every time I sit down.

My favorite time of day is in the mornings- you and I are both morning people.  We start our day before all the others bring their drama down the steps and we just have such an easy way of getting along.  You are quick witted and so freaking funny.  You always have a quippy comeback or something brilliant to add to the conversation.

Your smarts are sometimes a double edged sword.  This year you are really bored in school and you have a lot of kids in your class who are very rowdy.  It's created the perfect storm of big feels for you because as someone who likes order and thrives on predictability, school has been really uncomfortable for you this year.  It's been heartbreaking to watch you have such a hard time coping with the classroom this year- but at the same time, it's neat to watch you make sense of and learn how to manage some of the difficult personalities in your classroom.  Lots of life lessons being learned this year, my love. You are devouring books faster than we can get them into your sweaty little hands and you can freakishly figure out really complicated math problems in your head.  More than a million times I've heard you grumble about having to show your work on tests when you can do the problems in your head.

This year you discovered a love of baseball.  You played on a team with Miles and Scarlett and they put you guys on a team with all these kids way younger than you who wanted to eat dirt and roll around in the outfield.  I'm not sure if you all ever won a game, but you love the sport.  You and Daddy went to a St. Louis Cardinals game and now you are a full on Cardinals fan and can't wait for the spring when baseball season starts again for you.  In the meantime, you and Daddy throw the ball in the backyard whenever you can.  When I was a little girl, I used to dream of having a husband who threw the ball with his son.  It was a very June Cleaver dream- I realized it even then.  And here it is coming true.  Thank you. But then again, you make so many of my wildest dreams come true.

You love the outdoors.  Luckily for you, your two BFF's live down the street and you and Grace and Brady spend hours in the woods making club houses and secret hideouts.  You guys drag ropes and sticks and scrap wood and Daddy's tools back there and spend days making things.  You three have this simpatico that is darling to watch.  You have such strong friendships and you love your people fiercely.  It's one of my favorite things about you.  We still hope (not so secretly)  that you and Grace get married and give us grandchildren with Grace's freckles.  It will be a sign unto me that Jesus loves me beyond measure when those freckled babies arrive- but please Lord, not until you are both two decades older than you are now.

Noah, I often watch you sleep, all curled up like an angel baby with your protector Max Bear Terry tucked up under your arm and wonder what I ever did to deserve a treasure like you.  You take up so much space in my heart.  I watch the incredible young man you are becoming and I'm overwhelmed by your goodness and your care for others.  You are going to change the world in your own little way.  You already have changed mine and filled it with wonder and amazingness beyond all words.

You are so loved.  So very loved.  Keep being you.  Happy 9th birthday!

***Every year, I interview each of my kids on their birthday.  Usually, I ask the same questions every year so that I can watch how their answers change (or don't change) from year to year (2014) (2013) (2012) (2011)  (2010) (2009).  Sometimes I toss in a few new ones so that I can make sure to catch their little quirks and thoughts! ***

Mom: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Noah: I either want to help Sadie at her bakery or be a marine biologist.

Mom: Do you want to get married when you grow up?
Noah: Of course.
Mom:  What kind of person do you want to marry?
Noah:  I want them to be nice and I want them to care for the same things that I care for and I want them to be honest.
Mom:  Those are really good traits.
Noah:  Yeah- there's probably more but I can't think of them right now.

Mom: Do you want to have kids one day?
Noah:  uh huh.
Mom:  How many?
Noah: Three

Mom: What is your favorite thing about yourself?
Noah:  I like how easily I laugh.  I laugh a lot.
Mom:  That's one of my favorite things about you, too.

Mom:  Tell me about your personality.
Noah: Ummm, I laugh a lot.  I'm friendly.  I'm caring.

Mom: What is your favorite thing to do at school?
Noah: Read to self time because I like reading books a lot.  My other favorite thing is talking to friends at lunch.
Mom:  What is your least favorite thing about school?
Noah:  The other kids in my class because they get our whole class in trouble a lot even when it's not me.

Mom: What is your favorite joke?
Noah: Knock. Knock.
Mom:  Who's there?
Noah:  Apple.
Mom:  Apple who?
Noah:  Applesauce.

Mom: How do you like to spend your free time?
Noah: Playing with my friends in the neighborhood.
Mom:  What kinds of things do you all do?
Noah:  Play in the woods, play outside, and swing.

Mom: What is your favorite thing about mommy?
Noah:  How nice you are to everybody you meet.  Cause I feel like if you meet somebody and they don't treat you well you still treat them well.

Mom: What is your favorite thing about daddy?
Noah:  When he says, "THE PINCHERS ARE IN TOWN!"  (tickling game) because it always makes me laugh a lot!

Mom: Who are your best friends?
Noah: Grace Evans, Brady Morris and Avery Land.

Mom: What is your favorite holiday?
Noah: Halloween cause that's two holidays... my birthday and Halloween.

Mom: What is your favorite thing about having a brother and sisters?
Noah: I have someone to play with when I can't go to a friend's house.
Mom: What's the worst part about siblings?
Noah: They sometimes disagree with me and that makes us fight.

Mom: What do you think that high school will be like?
Noah: I don't think it will be very good because I feel like a lot of kids that are in high school act not as good as they were in middle school and stuff and so the people that are nice usually don't... I think the bad kids will get in trouble.

Mom: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Noah: I would go to the top of the tallest tree in the redwood forest and see how beautiful it is!

Mom: If you could make up your perfect day and do anything you wanted, what would you do?
Noah: I'd be able to fly that day and um, I'd have a day with just you and daddy and Sadie and we would go to Hawaii in three seconds and then make the day extra long so it lasts for a week and we stay there while Scarlett and Miles stay at Papaw Gary's house.

Mom:  What is your favorite memory of this last year?
Noah: Going to Hawaii and swimming with the turtles and seeing the dolphins.

Mom:What's one thing you really want to accomplish this year?
Noah: Get above grade level on everything on my report card.

Mom:  Why are you so cute?
Noah:  Because I was just born that way.
